It has come to our attention that there is a group of people that would like to do weekly and/or monthly garage sales by putting up tables in front of businesses in Newport and various other locations. The chamber cannot condone such activities for a couple of reasons; first, it is a state highway and there are certain rules and regulations that must be adhered to such as the American’s with Disability Act which prevents sidewalks from being blocked, and it is legally up to each business to regulate what is in front of their business as they are the one’s legally responsible. Second, the chamber does not have the insurance to cover such sidewalk sales which again puts the burden on the individual business.
As a chamber, we do everything we can to promote business and bring people to the downtown area and we have had several people say that the garage sale look is not appealing to the business clientele we are trying to attract. Each business must make their own determination as to what they want to allow in front of their business, but please understand the chamber cannot endorse or support such activities for insurance purposes. Events like WLTGO! are completely different and the chamber does apply for additional insurance where applicable and these types of sales are extremely attractive to the downtown area.
If you have any questions, we recommend you contact your insurance agent or attorney for guidance.

Teck Announces Reopening of Pend Oreille Operations
Metaline Falls, Washington – Teck American Incorporated (“Teck”) announced today it will proceed with the reopening of Pend Oreille, an underground zinc and lead operation near Metaline Falls, Washington State.
“In light of an anticipated improvement in the zinc market, Teck is moving forward with the restart of our Pend Oreille operations, which will contribute to economic growth and jobs in the region,” said Dave Riggleman, Acting General Manager, Pend Oreille Operations. “We look forward to working closely with communities and other stakeholders in the region as we advance our plans to restart the operation.”
Regulatory and environmental permits are in place and the mine facilities have been maintained to support the restart of the Pend Oreille operation. 80 employees are currently working at Pend Oreille Operations and the workforce is expected to grow to approximately 240 employees during operation. The majority of positions will be filled by the end of 2014. First production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2014 with a mine life of five years at a production rate of 44,000 tonnes of zinc in concentrate per year, with the potential to extend the mine life further if deemed to be economically viable.
Pend Oreille Operations was placed on care and maintenance in early 2009 as a result of global economic conditions.

Color Palette for Downtown Newport Unveiled
Sample "Before and Afters" and full range of color palettes presented
At our June Members' Meeting, designer Marti Kellogg, ASID unveiled the recommended color palette for downtown Newport, designed to better unify our downtown core to make our area more attractive to visitors, tourists and locals alike. This was part of the grant for downtown beautification that the Chamber had applied for from the POC EDC.
Marti has been in the industry for over 30 years and her first introduction to Newport was transforming Club Energy from it's previous white, purple and bright blue colors to its current timeless, classical look.
Using primarily colors from Benjamin Moore's Historical Collection, she presented almost 20 colors that were neutral enough to work with all the existing colors in our downtown, yet complimentary enough to work with each other and create a more cohesive and attractive downtown. The recommended color palette is shown.
To view some of the "Before and After" photographs of some sample buildings and touch and feel large paint samples of the colors shown, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or stop by our Visitors' Center.
Who will be the first to follow Club Energy's lead towards a more attractive and unified downtown core? Update: Griffin's Furniture is transforming its storefront - wow, what an improvement! Okay, who's next?
